What a wonderful piece of writing by Josie George on the snails in her garden, with her perceptive reading of snail trails as art ( Country diary, 24 September ). John Bunyan wrote that the snail “ goes but softly, but she goeth sure ” and that “others range and glare, but find no good”. As George says, we are as a species “cruelly dismissive of everything that is not us”. Three cheers for resilience and for the small, disregarded and humble. Mari Girling Oxford

My favourite crisps, Torres Fried Egg ( ‘They smell of urinal cakes!’: 100 unusual crisp flavours, ranked – from truly awful to totally scoffable, 23 September ), were given two out of 10 because … they taste like fried egg! “The egg ick?” Seriously? That’s like down-rating beef crisps because they taste of meat. Surely tasting as described is a positive for any food. Peter West London
