Fashion Month provides plenty of inspiration for new-season hair. The runways and streets alike are often dotted with fresh haircuts and colors, beckoning beauty trends that often define the months to come.

The same can be said of celebrity style, particularly the buzz around recent hair changes of stars like Demi Moore and Halle Berry. Berry’s longtime hairstylist, Renato Campora , took to Instagram this week to reveal her latest hair transformation, signaling the return of her ultra-short fringe, now with a softer, more flared silhouette. Known as the curtain crop, Berry’s cheek-length cut is already making waves as one of the most elegant haircuts for women over 50 this fall.

Celebrity hairstylist Adam Reed , whose clients include stars like Madonna and Reese Witherspoon, considers the curtain crop a “short, beautifully tailored haircut with softness and length left throughout the front,” striking a balance between curtain bangs and a contemporary bob. “The back and sides are cropped and considered while the fringe is kept longer and opened through the center,” he notes.

Reed adds that the look is defined by softness around the hairline, movement throughout the top, and keeping enough length at the front for versatile styling, whether the fringe is pushed back, parted, tucked, or allowed to fall naturally. “The key is not to make it too rigid or overly precise; it should feel personalized, rather than like you’ve simply had the ‘haircut of the season.’” As such, Berry’s variation of the trend incorporates a curly bob , while other references may feature slightly longer lengths, sleeker textures, or more pixie-inspired shapes.

According to Reed, fall typically inspires beauty lovers to add structure to their hair (something the curtain crop achieves), but recently, he’s noticed a subtle, collective desire to shift away from their comfort zone while maintaining their individual identity. “Someone who has lived in a bob or longer layers might suddenly want to expose the neck or take the sides shorter, but that longer curtain gives them familiarity and versatility.”

“I love that contrast, strong shape, and soft finish. It also looks incredible with autumn and winter clothes—collars, tailoring, scarves, or knitwear—as the haircut becomes part of the silhouette.”

Given that shedding, dryness, and frizz in hair can increase with age, those with mature hair may take a practical approach by opting for shorter, easy-to-style haircuts that use clever cutting techniques to enhance movement and volume. As seen on Berry, the curtain crop is a particularly strong candidate; rather than chasing an anti-aging effect, it takes pride in its modern, lived-in, and personalizable result.

Reed notes that a hairstylist can adapt the proportions of the curtain crop to a range of hair types. “On finer hair, this means keeping a little more density through the outline to make the hair appear fuller, while with thick hair, we can remove internal weight to aid movement.” And as for wavy and curly hair, it’s important to work with the natural texture rather than against it, so the curtain is often “much less controlled,” says Reed. While texture can play a role in the success of a curtain crop style, ultimately lifestyle is most important. “This is brilliant for somebody who wants sh…
