When President Donald Trump gathered execs from the world's most powerful tech companies in the White House on Tuesday to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, one company was conspicuously absent: Apple .

Neither Chairman Tim Cook nor his successor as CEO, John Ternus, were present, while leaders from every other tech megacap – and many other companies – lunched with Trump.

Apple didn't respond to CNBC's questions about the meeting, nor did the White House.

Social media buzzed with conjecture that Apple wasn't invited because the company is behind on AI.

Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner, a powerhouse investor in Silicon Valley and a Trump ally in the second term, called Apple's absence a " nothing burger " int an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Wednesday.

"I can assure you, they're very much read in on all of this, and I suspect they agree with all of it," Gerstner said.

Cook, as Apple's public face with government officials around the world, was at the White House less than a week ago, when he attended Trump's state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Gerstner pointed out.

Cook stepped down as Apple CEO in September, handing the baton to hardware specialist Ternus.

As part of the transition, Apple noted that Cook would still handle "engaging with policymakers around the world" as the company's executive chairman. His new role was underscored last week at the state dinner with Xi.

Over the years, Cook has put in the time to maintain a good relationship with Trump. He's made over 10 public appearances at events in the president's second term, including Trump's inauguration, in the oval office, at Davos, and at state dinners on multiple continents. He attended the "Melania" screening at the White House.

Throughout his dealings with Trump over the past two years, Cook has stayed on message, focused on Apple's manufacturing interests and trade issues, at a time where its products could be subject to tariffs . The company has given the Trump administration wins on issues like American investment and jobs while trying to ward off Trump's longstanding desire for the company to make iPhones in the U.S.

More recently, Apple has reportedly sought to use Chinese-made memory chips as prices skyrocket around the world, but doing so requires a license. Commerce Secretary Lutnick said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that "the Trump administration is not in favor of that."

Gerstner, in his CNBC interview, said that the participants at the lunch were the companies that were "really pushing the frontier on model development."

The iPhone makers' in-house models are smaller and more efficient than the so-called "frontier" models developed by the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic, which were both represented. Apple Foundation Models are mostly designed to run on Apple's own silicon inside iPhones and Mac computers. They run parts of Siri, while OpenAI and Anthropic's models use massive Nvidia -based clusters of chips.

Apple is a consumer company, whereas most of the frontier lab AI competition happens in the enterprise. Apple partners with Google to develop its models. Its capital expenditures a…
