Counter-Strike Sponsorships Face a Funding Gap in Brazil

Priya Venkatesh has been following the money in esports since before brand deals were considered legitimate marketing. She got pulled into the scene through competitive fighting games and eventually found herself more interested in the contracts and partnerships behind the tournaments than the matches themselves. These days she focuses on how brands navigate esports sponsorships, where the smart money is going, and which deals are actually built to last versus the ones that look good in a press release.

Brazil’s licensed betting sites went dark on Oct. 6 under a ban that has begun disrupting Counter-Strike sponsorships and revenue, with Congress and the Oct. 25 presidential runoff set to shape its future.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed Provisional Measure 1,394 on Sept. 25. Article 16 prohibits betting-related communication, advertising, promotion, marketing and sponsorship in physical or digital media when aimed at the Brazilian public; advertising and sponsor branding had to be removed within 10 days of publication.

Vivo Keyd Stars , whose main sponsor was EstrelaBet, paused its Counter-Strike 2 project indefinitely on Sept. 30 and released its players. LOUD also dismissed a CS2 roster before publicly announcing it, but the primary reporting said it could not find a public explanation from the organisation.

Reporting cited by The Esports Advocate said MIBR , Fluxo W7M and FURIA had removed betting sponsors from some or all communications, while Legacy and Imperial were still displaying Rainbet and Gamdom, respectively. Dust2 Brasil also cancelled its remaining BetBoom Storm events, citing circumstances beyond the parties’ control. Further changes to Brazilian Counter-Strike sponsorships and events show the disruption is already extending beyond team announcements.

The risk reaches tournament broadcasts as well as team shirts. BetBoom had secured Brazilian broadcast rights or sponsorship arrangements for much of top-tier Counter-Strike, including Portuguese- and Spanish-language Latin American broadcasts for BLAST, Brazilian rights for PGL, and sponsorship of Brazilian ESL FACEIT Group broadcasts through 2026.

During a portion of a Portuguese-language broadcast watched by The Esports Advocate, sponsor slots showed DHL, Intel and Acer’s Predator brand, with no BetBoom branding. The status of BetBoom’s agreements and who is now funding those broadcasts remain unclear. BetBoom also sponsors FURIA and Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo.

The government had collected R$2.5 billion (about $482 million) in betting licence fees, according to InfoMoney. Reuters, citing Brazil’s Finance Ministry, reported that households spend around R$60 billion ($11.6 billion) annually on online betting, generating about R$10 billion ($1.9 billion) in tax revenue. Those figures describe the wider market, not Counter-Strike’s share: the value of team sponsorship income tied to betting operators remains unknown. The sector’s reliance on betting partners also highlights wider commercial limits and risks in esports betting .

A provisional measure takes effect immediately but lapses unless Congress approves it. InfoMoney reported that the deadline falls in January or February 2027, depending on the congressional recess schedule; Senate President Davi Alcolumbre extended the amendment deadline to Oct. 13, and at least 26 amendments had been filed by Oct. 1.
