What took so long? Timed to International Day of the Girl on Saturday, Barbie is honoring Serena Williams , with her very own Barbie Signature Doll. Inspired by Williams ’ iconic championship victory in at the 2005 Australian Open, the doll pays homage to the look from her triumphant return to Grand Slam champion and 7th Singles title win. She’s sports a lime and white cutout top with mesh detailing, paired with a crips white skirt and matching socks and shoes. Obviously no Serena Williams Barbie doll is complete without a racket in hand, tennis ball, and fabulous hair.
“Growing up, I didn’t see many girls who looked like me being told there was no limit to who they could become,” Williams says. “I want every girl who plays with this doll to see possibility—not just in me, but in herself. She can dream big, work hard, change direction, break barriers, and become anything she chooses. That’s what makes having my own Barbie so meaningful to me.”
The Barbie Dream Gap Project is making a donation to Mrs. Rina’s House of Blessings, which helps fund programming focused on educating, training and inspiring children of struggling families to become compassionate leaders. The doll is available now in Target stores and online at retailers and Mattel Creations for $45. A grand slam!
