Getty Beauty Nails Is Miu Miu’s Messy Manicure a Trend or a Statement? Is Miu Miu’s Messy Manicure a Trend or a Statement? While the smudged nails are slightly infuriating, they say more about our obsession with perfection than they do about nail trends
Runway beauty looks often aim for perfection—flawless skin, a precisely drawn red lip, intentional glitter—but a recent Spring/Summer 2027 Paris Fashion Week look offered an antidote to the status quo. A beauty statement in the age of artificial intelligence.
At Paris Fashion Week, Miu Miu sent models down the runway with bright red nails, but with an unexpected twist: the manicure was deliberately smudged and messy, with polish smudged all over the cuticles. The look is a stark contrast to the “quiet luxury” nails and nude manicure trends we’ve been seeing lately. If you’ve ever given yourself a red manicure, then you know painting inside the lines is no easy feat, but manicurist Mei Kawajiri , who has worked with Dua Lipa and Gigi Hadid, purposefully painted beyond the nail in this case. Kawajiri describes the look, with paint bleeding well past the cuticles, as the manicure your boyfriend would paint.
With a message that says “This was painted by your toddler or someone who can’t find their glasses,” the smudged manicure sends a chill down my Type A spine—and I’m not alone. Most of the Bazaar editors loathed the look, calling it “engagement bait” and “silly.” When I take a step back and think about why this messy manicure infuriates me so much, I am reminded of our current obsession with perfectionmaxxing, which is more prevalent with Generation Z. I’ve seen countless TikToks of college students and women in their early 20s who wake up at 4:00 a.m. to go to the gym before work and optimize every minute until their 9-to-5 starts. The comments: viewers begging these women to “go to a club” and enjoy their youth. Truthfully, I’m guilty of this myself. From the moment my alarm goes off, I plan every minute of my day, including my manicure appointments.
It’s no coincidence that the rise of perfection aligns with the rise of AI technology like ChatGPT and Claude. We are trying to optimize everything and anything in our lives, which is why “maxxing” has become so popular. If beauty can provide an escape, an indulgence, and a way to find joy in something decidedly human-made , then that’s exactly what Miu Miu’s manicure does—it teaches us that a little messy polish, or even smudged lipstick, never killed anyone. A robot prompted to do nails for a Miu Miu show would never paint them like this , so maybe that’s worth loving. Even if just a little.
