Apple Expands Smart Home Strategy With New HomeView Hub

Apple expanded its smart home strategy Tuesday with the introduction of a new multimedia hub it's calling HomeView.

The elegantly designed aluminum device features a seven-inch Liquid Retina display connected to a domed speaker base by a stainless-steel hinge that adjusts the viewing angle. A wall-mounted version is also available.

The tabletop model (pictured above) comes in silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray. The wall-mounted version comes in space gray and silver. Both cost US$299, with pre-orders open now and availability beginning Nov. 13. Wall mounts are sold separately, starting at $59.95.

"Apple HomeView is designed to be shared by everyone in the home yet feel completely personal to each user," Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.

"It recognizes your face to shift from a household screen to your own experience, fills the room with incredible sound, keeps you connected to the people who matter most with FaceTime, and makes it easy to control your smart home," he added.

HomeView runs Apple Intelligence with Siri AI, which launches in beta. Personal-context features require a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with Siri AI turned on, according to Apple.

"They have done an exceptional job with personalization," said Ross Rubin, the principal analyst with Reticle Research , a consumer technology advisory firm in New York City.

"It recognizes up to six family members, showing information that is pertinent to them while not sending any information to Apple," he told TechNewsWorld.

"Even Siri requests sent to the cloud use an identifier and not an Apple ID, so requests are not personally identifiable," he added.

"Apple's signature clean design and strong underlying technology make HomeView a very capable smart display," noted Rob Enderle, president and principal analyst with the Enderle Group , an advisory services firm in Bend, Ore.

"However, I dislike that it forces you into the rigid Apple ecosystem, which makes it a non-starter for me and others like me, even though it will be perfectly fine for dedicated Apple fans," he told TechNewsWorld.

"I also have to point out that the design seems to heavily rip off existing Amazon Echo Show products," he added.

"Against competitors like the Google Nest Hub Max," he said, "the HomeView holds its own purely on the merits of its sleek hardware design and highly responsive screen technology."

HomeView is available in four colors: silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray.

Nevertheless, Enderle pointed out that Google maintains a distinct advantage in conversational AI capabilities, proactive daily assistance, and broader third-party smart home device compatibility out of the box. "That leaves the HomeView playing catch-up in terms of sheer utility," he said.

Brett Faulk, senior vice president and a principal analyst at SmartTech Research , a technology advisory firm in Las Vegas, noted that HomeView combines a useful seven-inch screen with personalized household experiences and privacy protections designed to keep each person's messages and calendar private.

"My main reservation is that Siri AI launches in beta, so its ability to reliably handle everyday requests still needs to prove itself in real homes," he told TechNewsWorld.

"HomeView's strongest competitive pitch is a shared display that connects closely to each person's Apple devices and personal information, backed by Apple's privacy protectio…
