Castrol's ex-works test RC45 leads trio of star lots at H&H's NMM sale

More than 200 classic motorcycles and vintage scooters go under the hammer at H&H Classics’ final sale of 2026 , held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull on Wednesday, October 28. Three lots in particular stand out from the catalogue, covering homologation-special superbikes, 1950s V-twin glamour and a barn-find curiosity in need of some love.

Topping the sporting bikes is a 1997 Honda RVF750R RC45 with genuine World Superbike pedigree. This example was supplied new to Burmah Castrol Trading, main sponsor of Honda’s factory WSB team, just over a month before the start of the 1997 season – the year John Kocinski won the title on an RC45.

H&H reckon it was likely used as a Castrol lubricants test bike, and it’s since covered 32,560 miles through just two further owners. It wears period Maxton suspension, a Dymag front wheel and a Yoshimura exhaust, and comes with a current V5C and MOT until September 2027.

A rare pairing of two 1950s icons, this 1955 Black Shadow and Steib ‘Zeppelin’ sidecar outfit has spent the last 32 years in the same family’s collection. It’s a late Series D model, from the final year of Vincent production, and will need recommissioning after standing for some time, though the engine turns over freely on the kickstarter.

The project of the bunch is this 1973 Triumph X-75 Hurricane, designed by Craig Vetter and one of only around 1200 built before production was cut short by new noise regulations.

Imported from long-term storage in an American barn, it turns over and selects all gears, but remains unregistered in the UK and comes with a NOVA certificate rather than a V5C.

Viewing takes place at the National Motorcycle Museum from 1pm on Tuesday, October 27 and 9am on sale day, with bidding open in person, online, by phone or via commission bid.

There may not be any really big hitters in this auction estimate-wise, but it’s a great opportunity to pick up a winter project or a very cool old bike for comparatively little money. There are so many lots going without reserve; somebody is bound to get a bargain along the line.
