From luxurious ergonomic thrones to cheap-and-cheerful bucket seats, the options available are bewildering. So I set out on an epic quest: to find the most comfortable, durable and stylish gaming chairs. Here’s what I discovered.

Why you should trust me I have been playing video games for 40 years (gulp), and writing about them for my entire career as a journalist. I spend most of my waking hours sitting with a joypad in hand, and as a sufferer of lower back pain too (gee, I wonder why?), being comfortable while I’m “working” is vital. I’m also a veteran reviewer of gaming technology, including joypads, monitors, keyboards and headsets. In short, I know what people need from their games hardware.
I’m paid to sit and play video games all day (and often into the night), so that’s exactly what I did to test the chairs here. I started by noting how easy or challenging they were to assemble, how sturdy they felt and their level of adjustability. I also judged how cool they looked as part of my gaming setup.
I tested 10 gaming chairs over five days each, spending up to four hours a day sitting on them, playing a variety of games, from restful puzzlers to intense shooters and complex flight sims. I also sought the opinions of my sons, who are also keen gamers, and my wife – who isn’t at all interested in games, but who works from home, so was able to assess each model as an occasional office chair .
Once the testing process was finished, the chairs were donated to the video games accessibility charity, SpecialEffect , so that other people will get to enjoy them while blasting noobs in Fortnite.
