One of the biggest misconceptions about hotel credit cards is that they're only worth carrying if you're fiercely loyal to that hotel chain.

That's certainly true for some premium hotel cards with hefty annual fees. But the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card (see rates and fees ) doesn't require you to stay at Marriott frequently to justify its place in your wallet.

In fact, if you stay at a Marriott property just once a year, the card can easily deliver more value than its $95 annual fee. While a general travel rewards or cash-back card may make more sense for many everyday purchases, the Boundless offers a combination of perks that can be surprisingly rewarding for occasional Marriott guests.

The biggest reason the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless makes sense for casual Marriott guests is its annual free night award .

Every year after your account anniversary, you'll receive a free night award valid for one night at a participating Marriott property, redeemable for up to 35,000 points. (Certain hotels have resort fees.)

Even better, Marriott lets members top off the certificate with up to 25,000 additional Bonvoy points , giving you access to properties that cost up to 60,000 points per night.

If you redeem that certificate for a hotel night worth more than the card's $95 annual fee, you've already come out ahead for the year — even if it's your only Marriott stay.

Considering that many Marriott hotel rooms routinely cost well over $95 per night, it's not difficult to get more value than the annual fee from a single redemption.

This separates the card from many other, more premium, hotel credit cards . You don't need to stay at Marriott every month to justify keeping it. Simply using the annual free night award strategically each year can offset the annual fee on its own.

Another nice perk is that the card automatically grants Silver Elite status .

Normally, you'd need to stay 10 eligible nights in a calendar year to earn Silver Elite. With the Boundless, you receive it automatically just for being a cardholder.

Silver Elite won't transform your hotel experience the way Platinum Elite or Titanium Elite might, but it's still a nice perk considering it requires virtually no effort.

The card also gives you a head start toward even more valuable status by providing:

Those 15 elite night credits mean you're already more than halfway to Gold Elite status, which normally requires 25 elite nights per calendar year. In other words, you'…
