Unity announces dedicated engine support for Netflix Games

Engine to support Netflix with cloud gaming optimisation and simplify cross-platform development

Image credit: Unity News by Sophie McEvoy Staff Writer Published on July 31, 2026 Follow Netflix Unity has launched dedicated engine support for Netflix platforms , making it easier for developers to ship titles on the streaming platform's ecosystem.

Netflix has maintained a strong relationship with Unity over the years, with games built on the engine including Black Mirror: Thronglets, Unhinged, and Squid Game: Unleashed.

The new engine support will help developers by providing optimisation for cloud gaming, enabling cross-platform builds, and simplifying game access for players.

Netflix-owned Night School Studio has used the engine for its latest games.

The developer previously highlighted its use of various Unity technologies on Black Mirror: Thronglets, especially "the physics engine for quickly prototyping and kickstarting ideation."

Last week, Unity announced its latest engine, Unity 7, which will begin beta testing this December and have a full release scheduled for Q1 2027.

Unity 7 will be a direct continuation of the current engine, with new features already "shipped and production-verified" within it.

"Because the architecture underneath doesn't change at the moment of version transition, teams can adopt with ease, with the workflows they depend on remaining fully supported," said Unity SVP of product Adam Smith.
