Service was down for several hours Saturday afternoon for thousands of Verizon customers in the U.S.

The outages began around 3:30 p.m. ET, with Verizon receiving the highest number of complaints at more than 13,000 at its peak, according to data tracking site Downdetector. The largest number of affected customers were located in major metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles and Boston.

"Our engineers have resolved the issue that affected voice services for some wireless customers this afternoon," the company told CNBC in a statement.

Verizon recommended that customers still having trouble with their service should restart their devices. The company did not provide a reason for the outage.

The Verizon outage impacted hundreds of customers from other major wireless carriers, including AT&T and T-Mobile US , whose calls couldn't get through, Downdetector showed.
