The American Express® Gold Card has long been one of the most popular rewards cards for people who spend heavily on food. Between its high earning rates at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets (subject to spending caps), and its collection of dining-focused statement credits, it can deliver significant value for the right cardmember.

But that doesn't mean it's the best card for every purchase. To maximize the value of the Amex Gold, you'll want to know exactly where it shines — and when another card in your wallet is the better choice.

Here's when you should (and shouldn't) reach for the Amex Gold.

The Amex Gold occupies a unique space in the rewards card market. It isn't a beginner card , but it also doesn't carry the premium price tag of cards like the American Express Platinum Card® , which has an annual fee of $895 (see rates and fees ).

Instead, at a more reasonable annual fee of $325 (see rates and fees ), it focuses on rewarding everyday spending, particularly food purchases.

Beyond its earning rates, the card also includes valuable statement credits and travel protections. You'll get up to $424 in annual value through an assortment of statement credits (more on that later) as well as up to $100 in hotel credits for stays at The Hotel Collection properties * (minimum two-night stay required) booked through amextravel.com or the Amex Travel App.

New Amex Gold cardmembers can find out their offer and see if they're eligible for as high as 100,000 bonus points after spending $8,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership. Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.

According to TPG's August 2026 valuations , this welcome offer is worth up to $2,000.

The Amex Gold isn't the only card to offer a bonus category on dining at restaurants worldwide, but it might just be one of the most valuable.

Cardmembers earn 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on dining at restaurants worldwide, up to $50,000 per calendar year (1 point per dollar spent thereafter). According to TPG's valuations, this equates to an 8% return on spending before the spending cap is hit.

For that reason, it tops our list of the best cards for dining out .

To get the most out of your Amex Gold for this category, you must maximize its dining statement credits .

Cardmembers can earn up to $10 per month (up to $120 per calendar year) in statement credits when paying with the Amex Gold at the following dining partners (enrollment required):
