I've long heard about the Netherlands' sprawling and utterly breathtaking fields that come alive during tulip season. And this spring, I finally got to see them for myself. Making the experience even more memorable, my trip was guided by locals who are experts in all things tulips: the team behind Bloomeffects , the tulip-powered skincare brand.
Kim van Haaster, Bloomeffects founder and CEO, created the "field-to-formula" brand to seek relief for her own eczema-prone skin. Using ingredients primarily sourced from her husband Hein's fourth-generation family tulip farm, H.M. van Haaster, Kim harnessed upcycled tulip bulbs and petals. After receiving two Dutch government research grants, Kim used regenerative DNA from the tulips to create the brand's star, proprietary ingredients: Dutch Tulip Complex and Proprietary Black Tulip Complex.
She taught me all about the skin benefits of tulips. Not only is the flower a natural humectant that holds its weight in water, but each is also packed with compounds like auxin that enhance cellular growth, amino acids that help build collagen, and kinetin, a growth factor that can guard against moisture loss. But my experience with Bloomeffects started before I ever boarded the plane to Amsterdam; I'm a loyal fan of the brand's Royal Tulip Hydrating Bi-Phase Tonic , which earned a 2026 Bazaar Skincare Award . The milky toner soothes and hydrates with ingredients like centella, chamomile, calendula, niacinamide, green tea extract, and the Dutch Tulip Complex.
Once I arrived in Holland, I was able to experience the full range with a facial at The Beauty House by Pulitzer Amsterdam. In the hands of The Beauty House's spa manager Marjolein de Swart, I went into the treatment jet-lagged and emerged with a completely refreshed, glow-from-within look thanks to the tulip-rich products. The esthetician started with the Royal Tulip Cleansing Jelly to wash away travel grime and followed with the Royal Tulip Hydrating Bi-Phase Tonic to soothe and hydrate. Next, she applied the new lifting and plumping Black Tulip RegeneLift Eye Serum , the brightening Royal Tulip Vitamin C Facial Oil , and Royal Tulip Elevate Creme , which uses a tripeptide-, prebiotic-, and ceramide-based formula to rebalance and strengthen the skin barrier. Since an effective skincare routine is never complete without sunscreen, de Swart completed my experience by applying the Tulipscreen Dew Serum with broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection in the shade Bronze. Its non-nano zinc oxide formula didn't leave a white cast on my skin, instead delivering a sheer and sun-kissed no-makeup makeup tint.
While visiting and frolicking through H.M. van Haaster's vast farmlands the next day, my education continued—not just about skincare, but about the fascinating seasonal harvesting process.
