Six months of growth sounds like momentum until you check the baseline. Climbing out of an unusually soft 2025 isn’t the same as getting back to normal.

Canadian travelers are gradually returning to the U.S. — but the road back to 2024 levels remains a long one.

Canadian-resident return trips from the U.S. rose 6.8% in September, marking the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth, according to figures released Tuesday by Statistics Canada. Return trips by car and by air both increased, by 5.6% and 11.6%, respectively.

However, return trips from the U.S. by car in September were 31.1% lower than in September 2024, while return trips by air were down 18.7%.
