Affordable wines: a Greek bottle to bid farewell to summer and a French red to greet autumn

I feature two wines from Aldi this week, one of which – the assyrtiko – was a wine of the week earlier this year. I’m highlighting it again as it’s great value and Aldi still has stocks. It might bring back memories of holidays in Greece, although I am told that this is much better than most of the wine served in Greek restaurants.

If the assyrtiko is a farewell to summer, then the Corbières is a welcome to autumn. This wine, from the south of France, has plenty of power to go with those richer stews and casseroles. At €8.99, it will appeal to those on a budget.

Fresh vibrant citrus and green apple fruits. A great aperitif or to drink with grilled white fish.

Medium- to full-bodied with spicy earthy dark fruits. One to enjoy with something substantial; a beef or lamb casserole?
