In the summer, the allure of simpler, more manageable haircuts is at an all-time high. Luckily, low-maintenance cuts come into play, because they grow out gracefully, require minimal day-to-day styling, and require far fewer trips to the salon—plus, the inspiration is endless.

According to Neale Rodger , hairstylist and style director at STIL Salon , this plethora of easy, timeless cuts reflects an overall shift toward haircuts that feel practical yet embrace individuality. “We’re seeing a growing appreciation for cuts that enhance confidence rather than chasing anti-aging ideals,” says Rodger. “Clients want hair that’s easy to live with, not hair that feels like a full-time job.”

Marc Trinder, creative director of Trinder Hair Studios , adds that increasing awareness of hair condition also plays into the shift. He cites styles that limit heat use, minimize damage, and lean into “natural curls and waves, instead of relying on daily straightening.”

When it comes to mature hair, Neäl & Wølf ’s head stylist and educator, Laura Elliott, explains that this new wave of low-maintenance haircuts is all too fitting. “As we get older, changes like shedding, slower growth, dryness, frizz, and graying roots can occur.” In these cases, shorter styles and those that make use of texture or clever cutting techniques can help hair appear fuller and healthier—without the extra upkeep.

Ahead, Bazaar consulted the three hairstylists to compile the five best, most flattering low-maintenance haircuts for mature women. From the soft bixie to the layered midi, take inspiration from these strategic styles for summer 2026.

Elliott calls the textured bob a modern, more playful take on the classic blunt bob. Rather than sharp, blunt edges, “the textured bob incorporates soft layers and subtle internal shaping to create a lived-in look that’s full of movement and dimension.” Elliott notes that this technique removes excess weight while encouraging natural lift, which makes it particularly flattering for mature women experiencing finer hair , density loss, or a lack of volume around the crown.

Trinder notes that the textured bob is equally ideal for the warmer months. “If you’re happy to let your natural texture shine and air-dry your hair, you can take a break from heat styling during summer,” he explains. “Comb the hair in the shower with a wet brush or wide-toothed comb, then apply an oil, texture spray, or curl cream while the hair is soaking wet. Once dry, gently separate the strands with your fingers.”

Altogether, styling takes seconds but uses conditioning and lightly sculpting products to reduce frizz and create an effortless effect. “The deliberately ‘undone’ finish means that this style works with the hair, rather than against it,” Elliott adds.

“Low-maintenance” doesn’t necessarily mean short, as Rodger notes. Take the layered midlength cut, for example. Typically sitting between the collarbone and shoulders, it’s known as one of the most versatile options for any age.

“Here, long, soft layers are introduced throughout the cut to remove bulk without sacrificing length,” observes Rodger. “This works well for mature women as it lifts the overall shape of the haircut, encourages natural movement, and prevents the hair from looking heavy or flat around the face.”…
