Despite the name, you won’t be needing your dancing shoes when you rock up at Billy Jeans. The name is a bit of a pun dreamed up by former owners Bill and Jean, but when they wanted to change the record, Robert Kardzis took over, and the name stayed.
Meet Robert, don’t call him Billy or Jean
“One Friday night I told my mum I was moving to Aberystwyth,” says Scottish-born Robert. “I thought it sounded Scottish… but then realised it was in Wales. But I met my wife so I stayed.”
Don’t get egg on your face, but do get your passport stamped
Bike nights are on Monday, but with classic nights, music nights and just plain old good local food to eat, bikers are always welcome.
Wales and Scotland come together (kinda by mistake)
“I tend to chase my hobbies – I like food, bikes, cars and music, so we do that,” he says. “But there is a lot of schoolboy humour here… we abbreviated the café name on our gin and vodka products [to the initials of the cafe] and if you present your helmet at the counter on a Sunday, you get 10% off.”
There’s always something happening at the café
Behind the counter, the staff are all local, as is the food. Primarily known as a breakfast café, they have meat from the local butchers and make their own cakes. But there’s always a special on the go.
The Loft is currently being built on the site and will play host to a bar and live music after Robert finishes building!
“The place feels like a bit of a hub,” says Robert. “The idea of the café is to be quite low key and welcoming. It’s friendly and we get all types of people from all types of groups here, including both choppers and scooters!”
