Amid the worsening environmental challenges facing Earth, calls for unconventional solutions to ensure the sustainability of human life are increasing. In this context, American billionaire and founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, proposed an ambitious vision to move polluting industries off the planet, specifically to the Moon, considering this a necessary step to save the Earth's environment and restore balance to it.
According to the Independent newspaper, Bezos stated that the Moon could present an extraordinary opportunity to expand industrial activity without harming the environment, affirming that moving heavy industries there would help keep Earth habitable.
During his speech at the VivaTech conference held in Paris on Wednesday, he described the Moon as a "gift" that could be harnessed to accelerate global economic growth while reducing the negative environmental impact on Earth.
The Moon colonization project is one of the long-term strategic goals of Bezos's company, Blue Origin, but this occasion marks the first time he has spoken explicitly and in detail about transforming the Moon into an industrial center of this scale, clarifying that, "Our long-term vision, our dream, is to move all polluting industries off the planet."
Bezos added that achieving this vision could give humanity the opportunity to restore Earth to its natural state as it was before the Industrial Revolution, pointing out that the current environmental situation reflects a significant deterioration compared to what the world was like about 500 years ago.
Regarding technological developments, Bezos noted that the massive data centers required to operate artificial intelligence technologies will be among the first sectors that might move to space due to their enormous energy requirements and advanced infrastructure.
Meanwhile, entrepreneur Elon Musk, known for his deep interest in the space field, expressed a similar sentiment, indicating his desire to build infrastructure for artificial intelligence off the planet, confirming that this is the "only way to scale this technology" in the future.
On the impact of artificial intelligence on the job market, Bezos disagreed with the views of several prominent figures in the tech sector who warn of widespread job losses, arguing that artificial intelligence will not lead to mass unemployment, but rather could contribute, conversely, to a labor shortage due to increased demand for human skills.
He said in this context: "I know there is a great deal of concern among many, including some thinkers, that artificial intelligence will make humans redundant." He added to clarify his position: "I completely disagree with this view, and I believe that artificial intelligence will lead to a labor shortage, not the opposite."
In a practical development, Blue Origin earlier this year revealed plans to deploy data centers in space, and also submitted an official proposal to regulatory authorities in the United States to create a network of over 50,000 satellites, aimed at supporting and operating workloads related to artificial intelligence technologies.
