Netflix Reveals New Horror Game Titled Unhinged from Developer Oxenfree

Netflix returns to the world of narrative adventure games with the upcoming release of Unhinged, a first-person horror game from Night School Studio, developer of Oxenfree. Unlike the teen drama of Oxenfree, Unhinged appears to be a more mature and bloody experience, revolving around two young women living in neighboring houses while one attempts to escape from a home invasion. Unhinged also features real acting talent, including Stranger Things and Spider-Man: Brand New Day star Sadie Sink, along with Zoë Kravitz, star of The Batman and Divergent, and veteran voice actor Troy Baker rounds out the cast. Instead of Netflix's previous experiences with interactive filmed content (like Bandersnatch from Black Mirror), this time we have a real video game controlled via phone and streamed to the TV through the Netflix platform. Gameplay relies on using the phone for receiving phone calls and text messages, or exploring its world using a virtual flashlight, and as expected, the story contains multiple branching paths to explore, and yes, you can die. While designed to feel like an episode of a Netflix show in terms of timing, it lasts less than an hour, but is replayable to discover different narrative branches. Game director Sam Warner from Night School said in a talk with Rolling Stone, ‘We studied the Wii and Nintendo DS deeply, I grew up with them, and I think focusing on innovative and new gameplay was the starting point for this game, if you have Netflix and a phone, this game is for you.’ Unhinged releases on June 30, and will be available to all Netflix subscribers.
