FEARS was a lousy opening guess, leaving me with 213 words and two yellow boxes. POINT slashed that number to 35, but gave me zero more boxes. “Queer” comes from German quer, meaning “oblique, off-center, or odd.” It entered Scots and then English in the 16th century with the meaning “strange,” “peculiar,” or “out of place.” In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it became a derogatory term for homosexual people, but from the late 20th century onward it was widely reclaimed and is now used by many as a positive umbrella term for LGBTQ+ identities.
