Ain al-Hilweh Faces New Security Challenge.. The Rise of Extremist Influence Raises Concerns

It was learned that Ahmad Gandhi al-Sahmarani, a Lebanese, has recently emerged in the ranks of extremist groups in the Ain al-Hilweh camp.

According to information, al-Sahmarani, the son of Abu Ramzi al-Sahmarani who was killed earlier by the Ansar Brigade, had spent about 10 years in Roumieh prison under two judicial sentences.

Data indicates that al-Sahmarani plays a legitimate role within some extremist Takfiri groups in Ain al-Hilweh and has a number of pledging supporters, including Omar Shahadi Jawhar, the son of the former Ansar Brigade leader Shahada Jawhar who was killed in 2008.

Information also indicates that his name was raised in the context of a fatwa related to the killing of Abd Fadda by Muhammad Hamad.

In this context, these extremist groups are increasingly prominent within the Ain al-Hilweh camp, amid what a Palestinian source describes as a retreat in the role of Fatah compared to previous phases. The source says that “nature abhors a vacuum,” considering that this reality has allowed extremist groups to expand their influence and attract more supporters within the camp.

According to the source, this scene has been accompanied over the last few months by an increase in incidents of murder and armed conflicts, raising growing fears of deteriorating security conditions and a rise in random killings within the camp, in light of the absence of a capable authority to control security and prevent the expansion of extremist groups.
