Two wines that capture the sunshine of Sicily

We have two wines from the Tesco Finest range this week. Both are from Sicily, one of the largest wine regions of Italy, and producer of some great value wines. Both of the wines below are made from widely grown local grape varieties.

At one stage, Grillo was mainly used to make the large quantities of vermouth and marsala produced in Sicily. Made into wine, it can be fresh but a bit neutral at times. However, the Tesco version has plenty of fruit.

Nero d’Avola is the most widely planted grape in Sicily where it enjoys the hot dry climate. The wines can be medium- to full-bodied, depending on the local climate and soils. Both of these wines are well-priced and worth trying out. They are reduced to €9 in promotions from time to time.

Plump ripe peach fruits with mouth-watering citrus notes, finishing dry. Try it with a fish stew, grilled tuna or lighter pasta dishes.

Medium-bodied with fresh plum and dark cherry fruits and light tannins. Tomato-based pasta dishes or pizza.
