Like any haircut, not all bob styles are created equal. Some are endlessly flattering on narrow faces but can look harsh on rounder features, while others complement natural waves effortlessly yet appear shattered and chunky on fine, straight strands. However, if there were ever a truly universal option, it would be the classic blunt bob. While the length of this iconic cut may vary to suit each individual's features, its graphic finish works beautifully on almost every hair type. You simply have to find a hairdresser who can master the technique on your personal texture.

Not only is the classic blunt bob a favorite of the Bazaar beauty team, but it has also served as a source of inspiration for A-listers of all ages. Hailey Bieber's iconic “boyfriend bob” helped spark a resurgence of the trend among Gen Z, while Penélope Cruz and Jessica Chastain have recently demonstrated the style's enduring appeal for women over 50.

Ahead, expert hairstylist and Rahua cofounder Fabian Lliguin shares his insights on the enduring appeal of the blunt bob and explains why it is the ideal cut for mature hair types this summer.

“A blunt bob is about precision: one clean, sharp line at the ends instead of soft, feathered layers,” Lliguin explains. “Every strand falls to the exact same length, so the perimeter looks solid and graphic. Length is flexible; it can be cut anywhere from the classic blunt bob above the jaw, or closer to the shoulders, or a lob.”

A perfect example of the cut is Jessica Chastain's latest jaw-length bob, while those who prefer a little more length can look to Julianne Moore's shoulder-grazing lob. Curly hair types can embrace the style, as Halle Berry has, but it's important to seek out a hairstylist who specializes in precision cutting for curls to prevent excess bulk through the ends.

The blunt bob is universally flattering across age groups, offering a striking and sophisticated update to mid-length and long hairstyles. It is especially effective at addressing many of the common challenges associated with aging hair, making it a smart choice for those seeking a fresher, fuller-looking style.

“I love a blunt bob for mature clients because it solves two things at once, density and shine,” he explains. “Hair naturally thins with age, and a blunt line tricks the eye into seeing more thickness. That same straight edge also catches light more evenly, so the hair looks glossier. It also frames the jawline in a way that feels current rather than dated.”

While your styling routine will largely depend on your hair's natural texture, there are several steps you can take to achieve the sleek, polished finish for which the blunt bob is known.

“I start with a leave-in on damp hair for slip and heat protection, since mature hair tends to be more porous,” says Lliguin. “Then I blow-dry with a round brush, rolling the ends slightly inward to prevent a blunt line from looking harsh. A quick flat-iron pass smooths the cuticle and sharpens the edge. Finishing with a couple drops of Rahua oil through the mid-lengths and ends and a volume product to lift from the root.”
