Israel Acknowledges 'Mass Armenian Genocide'

The Israeli government unanimously agreed to recognize the 'Armenian Genocide and to refer to Istanbul as Constantinople,' following a proposal by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar to acknowledge the Armenian genocide.

The draft resolution states that Israel, based on its moral and historical commitment, will recognize the genocide committed against the Armenian people at the end of the Ottoman Empire, as expressed. The proposal also condemns the denial of the historical facts of these events or downplaying them or distorting them, and the decision will also be submitted to the Knesset for approval.

The fact of the Armenian genocide in the Ottoman Empire has been recognized by 23 countries, as well as by the European Parliament and the World Council of Churches. In 2021, former President Joe Biden became the first American leader to officially acknowledge the Armenian genocide. Ankara firmly rejects such a description of the events of 1915 and insists that it was not a genocide, but a war between brothers in which both Armenians and Turks were victims.
