Azteca: A World Cup Fortress Where Mexico Never Loses

The Mexican national team has maintained its unbeaten record at the 'Mexico City' (formerly Azteca) stadium in the FIFA World Cup.

The Mexican team beat Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday evening local time in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.

Julian Quinones opened the scoring for Mexico in the 22nd minute, before Raul Jimenez added the second goal in the 31st minute of the match.

This is now the 11th consecutive match that the Mexican national team has played at this stadium in the World Cup without losing in regulation time.

Before facing Ecuador, Mexico - which is the first country in history to host 3 World Cups - had played 10 World Cup matches at the 'Mexico City' stadium in the Mexican capital.

In the previous 10 matches at this stadium in the World Cup, Mexico achieved 7 victories, while drawing in 3 matches, including one in the knockout rounds that they could not settle in their favor due to penalties.

Mexico played 3 matches at this stadium when it hosted the 1970 World Cup; drawing 0-0 with the Soviet Union, before winning 4-0 and 1-0 against El Salvador and Belgium respectively in the group stage of the tournament.

When Mexico moved away from this stadium in the 1970 World Cup, the Latin country exited the World Cup quickly, after losing 1-4 to Italy in the quarter-finals, which were held at the 'Estadio Luis Dosal' in Toluca.

In the 1986 World Cup, Mexico won 2-1 against Belgium and 1-0 against Iraq, drew 1-1 with Paraguay in the group stage at the 'Mexico City' stadium, before winning 2-0 against Bulgaria in the Round of 16 at the same venue.

Mexico drew in both regulation and extra time 0-0 with West Germany in the quarter-finals at the 'Mexico City' stadium as well, leading both teams to penalties, which ultimately smiled on the European team, which paved its way in that edition where it finished second.

During the current World Cup edition, Mexico won 2-0 against South Africa in the opening match of the tournament at the 'Mexico City' stadium, which also witnessed the local coach Javier Aguirre's team winning 3-0 against the Czech Republic in the final round of the group stage.

Meanwhile, Mexico played its match where it won 1-0 against South Korea in this edition in the city of Guadalajara.
