New clarification from PlayStation: Game disc reprints will continue even after 2028

Players can purchase discs for games released before 2028.

0 Twitter Telegram Whatsapp Facebook The news regarding Sony's decision to stop producing disc copies in 2028 continues, as after acknowledging the increased demand for the PS5 disc drive and imposing purchase restrictions! Today we had a new announcement, with PlayStation confirming that publishers will still be able to print physical copies of games even after January 2028, despite the company's previous decision to cease production of new discs.

This development comes after the announcement that shook the gaming industry and sparked widespread debate online, when Sony revealed that it would stop manufacturing physical titles starting in January 2028. This clarification may provide some reassurance to players, meaning they will still be able to obtain existing game discs for an additional period.

According to a new report from Game File, Sony sent a message to its game publishing partners confirming that they will still be able to “reorder printing PlayStation discs for current games.”

In clearer terms, the company will allow printing any game released before the deadline, meaning that previous releases will not suddenly disappear from the physical market. However, Sony also clarified that there will be a change in the “disc ordering mechanism,” with details to be revealed later.

After the deadline, the company confirmed that publishers will still be able to release new games in stores in the form of digital codes instead of traditional discs.

Thus, players will still be able to purchase physical copies of games released before 2028 even after the decision takes effect, but ambiguity still surrounds the format for new game releases: Will they be in the form of cards containing codes? Or some completely different format?

So far, players are left waiting for official clarifications from Sony to reveal the final form of this major shift in game distribution.

I have loved video games since the days of the family console, and I prefer adventure games like Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed (before the shift to RPG), I have no bias towards any home console; the best for me is the one that offers the most distinctive games. What matters to me is the experiences with engaging storytelling, as the story is the foundation of enjoyment more than the gameplay.

The problem is not in the idea but in content production.
