The problem is not in the idea but in content production.
0 Twitter Telegram Whatsapp Facebook Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney hinted that AI technologies could be capable of “reviving games like Destiny”. This was stated in a post on platform X (formerly Twitter) in response to a report regarding Destiny 2, where Sweeney sarcastically wrote:
“If only there were a modern technology capable of overcoming the first point, allowing games like Destiny to thrive!”
This remark comes at a time when Sweeney recently expressed a controversial opinion, considering Steam's demand for developers to disclose their use of AI in game development as “irresponsible”.
In another development, it was announced in June 2026 that Epic's Unreal Engine 6 will integrate AI tools aimed at “reducing burdensome routine work” in the game development process, reflecting the company's increasing shift towards relying on AI.
Sweeney's comment was made in the context of a report from Forbes magazine that mentioned Destiny has not generated stable profits throughout its existence due to “the massive amount of content that needed to be produced continuously without stopping.”
From Sweeney's remark, it is understood that AI could be a potential solution to expedite content production or even assist in generating it entirely, alleviating the significant burden on development teams and making live service game models more sustainable.
Interestingly, Sweeney did not comment on another more sensitive reason mentioned in the report, which indicated that the game's profitability period was met with poor financial management, where profits were “immediately misused by management at the time.”
It is noted that the developer studio Bungie faced significant internal controversy in August 2024, as some former employees demanded the then-CEO, Pete Parsons, to resign, and leveled sharp accusations that were described as “not suitable for public disclosure.” Recently, Bungie announced the end of updates for Destiny 2 amid reports of no Destiny 3.
Sweeney is not new to fiery statements; in March 2024, he described Valve officials as “scoundrels” during communications revealed in an antitrust case against the company, reflecting his blunt and controversial style of expressing his views within the gaming industry.
I have loved video games since the days of the family console, and prefer adventure games like Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed (before the shift to RPG), I have no bias towards any home console, for me the best is the one that offers the most distinguished games. What matters to me is the experiences with compelling storytelling because the story is the foundation of enjoyment more than the gameplay.
The last update for Destiny 2 will be on June 9, 2026.
