From Console to Cloud… Sony Outlines the New PS6 Generation

A completely new experience led by the digital revolution.

If players hoped that the physical disc crisis was just a passing incident, Sony's recent statements are unlikely to ease those concerns much.

After announcing it would stop producing Blu-ray discs for new PlayStation games starting in 2028, Sony has revealed the outlines of its long-term plan for its upcoming generation — expected to be the PlayStation 6. During the investor Q&A session in May, which has been recently translated, it became clear that the company is heading towards one decisive vision: the future of PlayStation will be 'entirely digital platform'.

During the session, Sony was asked if it still sees itself as a traditional 'console' company, especially with over 125 million active monthly users, and the expansion into recurring revenue models. Its response defended the value of dedicated hardware, asserting that 'the value of our device lies not in the hardware itself, but in the experience it offers.' According to the company, PlayStation differs from generic devices, as it provides smooth and rapid access to content, allowing players to enter games instantly without complications.

But here, the response took a more concerning turn.

Sony added that 'a large part of our ecosystem's value comes from external publishers, who benefit from the massive user base, strong community interaction, and monetization tools.' It concluded this thought with a striking phrase: 'This supports our transition towards a truly fully digital platform model.'

These statements also reinforce reports suggesting that Sony has become more selective in its releases on PC. According to previous media reports, it is said that management within PlayStation Studios emphasized that exclusive narrative-driven games should remain within the PlayStation ecosystem. Meanwhile, the company confirmed that it does not want to confine itself to its hardware ecosystem but seeks to cautiously expand to other platforms like PC and mobile.

While first-party games do not represent the bulk of sales, they remain the 'main entry point' for audiences into the PlayStation world. Sony bets that its major titles enhance brand loyalty in the long run.

The numbers paint the picture clearer: revenues from PC and other platforms are estimated at around $650 million, compared to about $16.5 billion from the PlayStation Store alone. This means that the existence of PlayStation games outside its platforms represents only about 4% of total revenue, pushing the company to 'improve overall value rather than disperse.'

However, it does not appear that Sony intends to abandon PC entirely. It sees that live service games could benefit from expansion across multiple platforms, and it allows its partners to publish their games on PC to reach a wider audience. This is evident in projects like the Marvel Tokon game that will release on both PC and PlayStation together in August.

Another surprise was Sony's view on its upcoming generation. Instead of trying to directly compete with PC platforms, the company says that PlayStation 6 will offer 'a unique value of its own,' with expansion into gameplay styles outside the living room, implying rumors of a handheld device similar to the Switch within the PlayStation ecosystem.

In conclusion, the company expressed optimism about the future, asserting that it sees 'great growth opportunities in the next five years.' With reports suggesting facilities for disc production are indeed being redeployed, it appears that the countdown to a fully digital future for PlayStation has officially begun.

I have loved video games since the days of the family console, preferring adventure games like Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed (before shifting to RPGs). I have no bias towards any home console; for me, the best is the one that offers the most outstanding games. What matters to me are the experiences with compelling storytelling because the story is the foundation of enjoyment more than gameplay.
