BSB Snetterton: Glenn Irwin avoids any hip, pelvis and major cervical spine fractures after opening lap incident

Glenn Irwin has been cleared of any hip, pelvis and major cervical spine fractures following the first lap incident in the opening British Superbike Championship race at Snetterton.

Irwin was one of three riders collected by Graeme Irwin, who came into Turn Two too quickly and collided with those ahead. Alongside Irwin, Charlie Nesbitt sustained a fracture to the second metacarpal in his right hand, whilst Rory Skinner’s bike was damaged to the point where the Scot was unable to make the restart.

“Glenn Irwin sustained injuries to his hip and neck in yesterday’s race one crash at turn two (Wilson),” an official BSB medical update said. “He was stabilised at the circuit and transferred to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

“Initial scans have excluded hip, pelvis and major cervical spine fractures. He awaits a further scan tomorrow to clarify any injury to the neck. He is expected to be released in the coming days.”

Graeme Irwin has been handed five penalty points for causing the collision and must also start his next race from the back of the grid. The Northern Irishman is currently riding in place of brother Andrew Irwin , who is continuing his recovery from a fractured right humerus bone .

The opening BSB race was won by Bradley Ray , with Scott Redding and championship leader Kyle Ryde joining the 2022 champion on the podium. Max Cook was in contention for the win when he was forced to retire due to a broken gear lever.

Sunday’s races (July 5) are scheduled to take place at 13:20 and 16:30.
