Iraq issues 24-hour ultimatum to Al Arabiya over Maliki news report

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Iraqi Media and Communications Commission issued an official legal warning to the Al-Arabiya satellite television network on Monday, July 6, 2026, granting the international broadcaster a strict twenty-four-hour deadline to formally acknowledge a severe professional media violation.

According to an official regulatory document obtained by Alsumaria News, the state communications regulator enacted its statutory oversight authority over the domestic information sector following a major breach of the national broadcasting code of conduct.

The regulatory intervention directly targets controversial multimedia content published across Al-Arabiya’s verified digital accounts on both Facebook and TikTok, which regulatory officials determined violated binding statutes governing media objectivity and public safety.

The regulatory commission explicitly cited two fundamental pillars of the Iraqi Media Broadcasting Rules, highlighting clear violations of Section One of Chapter Two, which strictly prohibits the incitement of violence and social hatred, alongside Section Four of Chapter Two, which mandates absolute accuracy, integrity, and journalistic transparency in information delivery.

The regulatory filing detailed that Al-Arabiya’s digital broadcast, titled “Al-Maliki Received the Budget of a Continent and Founded Corruption in Iraq,” completely lacked standard investigative verifications, objective sourcing, or balanced presentation.

Government media monitors noted that the news segment utilized an aggressive, declarative narrative style that intentionally blurred the line between subjective commentary and verified factual reporting, a practice the state regulator warned creates widespread public misinformation based on unsubstantiated claims.

Consequently, the Media and Communications Commission ordered Al-Arabiya to immediately purge the non-compliant multimedia content from all its broadcasting platforms, including its primary website, associated digital archives, and corporate social media accounts.

The regulatory ultimatum demands the immediate publication of a formal, on-air clarification admitting to the professional journalistic error within twenty-four hours of receiving the official decree.

Regulatory officials concluded the enforcement warning by stating that Al-Arabiya will face severe legal and financial liabilities, potentially including the suspension of its domestic operating licenses and substantial financial penalties, should the network fail to comply within the mandated statutory timeframe.
