One game kept Xbox standing!
0 Twitter Telegram Whatsapp Facebook Xbox had a tough week by all measures. Between studios leaving Microsoft's umbrella and layoffs affecting thousands of employees, along with an unprecedented management restructuring, the Xbox brand appeared to be entering one of its most tumultuous phases in its history.
While what’s happening inside Xbox has sparked widespread division in the gaming industry, there’s at least one piece of news that wasn’t on the crisis list… which is the abandonment of physical discs.
But behind the scenes, reports reveal that the story is more complex than it seems.
According to a new report published by Bloomberg, further details have emerged about how Microsoft has been managing Xbox operations, including a noteworthy piece of information revealing that the success of Minecraft was not just a business achievement, but represented a financial lifeline supporting other projects within the gaming division.
Earlier, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma published a lengthy message outlining the features of the next phase, confirming that the company is preparing for a comprehensive restructuring after years of massive investments that didn’t yield the desired growth.
Information suggests that Xbox is facing significant financial pressures, which led it to execute a wide-ranging reorganization plan that involved laying off about 3,200 employees, along with reducing several management levels within the company.
In its report, Bloomberg highlighted the pivotal role played by Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft.
According to sources familiar with Xbox operations, the profits generated by Minecraft were used at one point to finance the rest of Xbox’s game portfolio, making the game one of the most important financial pillars the company relied on over the past years.
This may explain Asha Sharma's recent decision to give Mojang a larger role within the organizational structure, enabling the studio to report directly to her, alongside King, the well-known developer of Candy Crush.
This move indicates that Microsoft intends to rely more on its most profitable teams, in a bid to rebalance Xbox operations after one of the hardest periods the brand has faced.
I’ve loved video games since the days of the family console, and I prefer adventure games like Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed (before it turned into RPGs); I have no bias toward any home console, for me the best is the one that offers the most distinctive games. What matters to me are experiences with captivating storytelling because the story is the essence of fun more than gameplay.
The famous brand is preparing for a more expansive era.
