The impossible has become a reality; the game runs on a 27-year-old device.
0 Twitter Telegram Whatsapp Facebook A content creator on YouTube has achieved an amazing technical feat by running a 3D version of Minecraft on the Game Boy Color, a device nearly 30 years old.
Windows Central reported on a new video posted by the YouTuber Game of Tobi titled “REAL 3D Minecraft on the Game Boy!”, showcasing a special version of the renowned Mojang game that actually runs on the classic handheld device, defying all expectations regarding its technical capabilities.
This project is a tribute to the first video posted by the channel owner, where he previously succeeded in running Minecraft on the Game Boy Advance. The video begins by displaying the main menu, showing the game as “MINICRAFT 3D by GAMEOFTOBI,” with four main options: open a randomly generated world, a flat world, toggle textures on and off, or continue the last save file.
Upon selecting the generated world, players enjoy a full 3D Minecraft experience on the Game Boy Color, with the ability to break blocks, place them, and explore the environment freely. What's even more exciting is that all this operates on a device released before two complete generations of hardware capable of running 3D games.
The developer didn't stop there; he also added the famous Nether dimension to the game, while the Flat World option is favored for building enthusiasts who desire creativity without terrain restrictions.
Textures can be toggled to give the world a more original Minecraft appearance, although they remain limited due to the technical constraints of the device.
Another surprise revealed in the video is that the game not only runs on the Game Boy Color but can also be played on the original Game Boy. Game of Tobi demonstrated this practically, although the performance was at half the speed of the Game Boy Color version due to hardware differences.
At the end of the video, the YouTuber announced that the 3D Minecraft version for the Game Boy Color is now available for free download on his Patreon page, just as he did with the Game Boy Advance version previously. He also hinted that the GBA version would receive an update soon.
I have loved video games since the days of the family console. I prefer adventure games like Tomb Raider and Assassins Creed (before transitioning to RPGs). I have no bias towards any home console; for me, the best is the one that offers the most distinctive games. What matters to me is the experiences with engaging storytelling, as the story is the essence of enjoyment more than the gameplay.
