id Software Issues Statement Following Recent Xbox Layoffs

id Software issued an official statement following the recent layoffs at Xbox, which resulted in nearly half of the studio's staff losing their jobs, in an effort to reassure players about its future. According to the WARN notice filed in Texas, 96 employees were laid off from the studio's Richardson headquarters, along with the elimination of 40 remote jobs, as part of the restructuring plan led by the new Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma. id Software confirmed in its statement that it still has the team needed to develop the games and technologies for which it became famous, noting that its current team size is roughly equivalent to the size of the team that developed Doom in 2016. The studio said: "Despite being affected by these changes, they were distributed across different teams. We still have the team we need to develop the games and technologies that we became known for. Our team size today is roughly the same size we had while developing Doom in 2016, and we will continue to develop the games and technologies that have distinguished us for the past 35 years." id Software and Xbox also denied rumors that work on the id Tech engine had nearly ceased, confirming that "dozens of people" are still working on the engine at various sites, and that reports stating only one person remained in Texas were "inaccurate." More on this topic: the reveal of the Revelations expansion for Doom: The Dark Ages. And although no new project has been announced, IGN reported that the studio continues to work on prototypes for several projects, while a report from GamesBeat mentioned that ideas such as an original game inspired by John Wick, a new Perfect Dark game, and a co-op Doom game were being considered prior to the layoffs.
