Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ali al-Zaidi, chaired an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss security developments in the region.
Al-Zaidi emphasized the need to prevent any violation or threat emerging from Iraqi land toward neighboring nations, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The prime minister directed the establishment of a joint security committee to address current challenges and to follow deterrent procedures to prevent attacks or potential violations against neighboring countries.
Al-Zaidi also directed Iraqi security forces to enhance stability, protect sovereignty, and maintain good neighborly relations.
The meeting addressed the Iraqi army’s readiness to counter any attempt to strike neighboring nations, as well as Iraq’s unwavering commitment to prevent the use of its territory to launch attacks against other countries.
The formation of a joint security committee is part of Iraq’s responsibility to preserve national sovereignty and uphold the principles of good neighborliness and international law.
The decision to form this committee follows substantial regional triggering events in recent days.
The United States and Saudi Arabia launched coordinated attacks on targets in several Iraqi provinces. The alliance declared that these were retaliation strikes in response to drone and missile assaults on regional oil infrastructure and military targets.
Prior to the security meeting, Jordan and Syria cautioned Baghdad about Iran-backed armed groups operating in Iraq, warning that cross-border threats would not go unnoticed.
