In June and July, the United States ushered in visitors from dozens of countries as a World Cup host. It wasn’t enough to put an end to disappointing overseas tourism figures.

The travel industry had been banking on the World Cup to help turn around inbound tourism struggles. Instead, 14 of the 20 top overseas tourist-generating countries pulled back in July — including four countries that played in the U.S. that month.
The latest government data on inbound tourism, released Thursday, shows a 7% decline in overseas visitation to just over 3 million in July. Total figures are nearly 23% below pre-pandemic levels when excluding travel from Canada and Mexico.
