Trade war tensions between the United States and Canada are on the rise, a risk to the U.S.’ inbound travel recovery.
The White House launched 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and Canada hit back with retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of goods. “You’re at war when you’re attacked, and we got attacked,” said Mark Carney, Canada’s Prime Minister. Tensions escalated Thursday when President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
The dispute comes right as Canadians were starting to give U.S. travel another chance.
A July survey from Longwoods International found 28% of Canadian travelers visited the U.S. within the past six months, up from 23% the year prior.
