Layered hair is making a major comeback—and the choppy bob is leading the way. A modern take on the classic cut, it trades a perfectly polished finish for irregular layers, softened ends, and plenty of movement. The result feels effortless and relaxed while remaining thoughtfully shaped to suit the wearer, and it's much easier to manage.

Unlike a blunt bob, the choppy bob is designed to look slightly undone. The varied ends create softness and volume, making the style particularly appealing for anyone who wants a haircut with plenty of character but minimal daily styling.

“The choppy bob is a modern interpretation of the classic bob, defined by irregular, textured layers rather than a perfectly blunt or polished finish,” says Fabian Lliguin , hairstylist and cofounder of Rahua haircare. “The beauty of the cut is in its movement; the ends are intentionally varied, creating softness, volume, and a slightly undone quality.”

The style is also incredibly versatile. It works well with naturally straight hair, gentle waves, or curls, while the layering can be adapted to suit different hair densities. “For finer hair, a more strategic approach to layering can create the illusion of fullness and movement,” explains Lliguin. “Thicker hair can benefit from removing some weight through the ends. I always think the best haircut works with the hair you naturally have rather than asking the hair to behave in a way it doesn’t want to.”

When it comes to styling, the key is to avoid making the hair look too perfect. Start with towel-dried hair and use your fingers to encourage its natural movement as it dries. You can air-dry for a softer finish or use a diffuser to enhance texture. Once dry, twist or pinch small sections between your fingers to define the choppy layers, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends.

“The finished look should have movement and softness—you want the hair to feel touchable rather than stiff,” says Lliguin. “The goal is to create definition that still looks completely natural.”

For an easy styling boost, Lliguin recommends Rahua’s Aloe Vera Hair Gel . “It gives the hair flexible definition without taking away its natural movement,” he says. “I would apply a small amount to towel-dried hair, working it through the lengths and ends with the fingers, before either air-drying or blow-drying. Once dry, use your fingertips to separate a few pieces around the face and ends.”
