Affordable wines: Two French reds now on sale at a big discount

T he SuperValu French wine sale kicked off on Thursday this week with some real bargains on offer. I highlight two red wines here as I think they offer the best value for money.

If you prefer white wines, you could try the Coteaux du Giennois Alchimie (€10), a refreshing sauvignon and a great inexpensive alternative to Sancerre. The Domaine de la Baume Viognier (€10), a richer more textured wine, also offers value. Burgundy fans should be drawn to the André Goichot Chablis, very well priced at €15 a bottle.

SuperValu usually includes a few guest wines in its sales at very keen prices. However, these are available in very limited quantities and in selected stores only. If you can find them, the Saint-Joseph Les Challeys 2024, Delas Frères (€15), the Château Les Ormes de Pez 2017, Saint-Estèphe (€20), and the Marcel Hugg Alsace Riesling Réserve 2025 (€12) all offer exceptional value for money.

Medium bodied with supple, ripe dark fruits and a smooth finish. Great value for money. This would go down well with firm cheeses and most pork and chicken dishes.

Very popular with SuperValu customers, this offers great value at €10. Rich and full bodied with powerful spicy red fruits and a smooth finish. Save this for red meats, either roasted, stewed or barbecued.
